Did the musicians drive the dancers to perform better or was it the other way round? Many viewpoints have been argued around this issue and although it is likely that the majority opinion these days gives primacy to the bands, evidence to the contrary remains unanswered. The Savoy experience should prove to be a rich one for arriving at some definite conclusions. We can confidently say that both bands and dancers inspired each other. The Savoy was the location where the best dancers encountered the best music and good things were just bound to happen. Many accounts give prominence to the big named Guest Bands that played the Savoy, but the mainstay was usually the House Bands. This section of the site will be looking at both types of bands and many of the prominent musicians that played in them as possible, along with their vocalists.
